What do Balinese names mean?
Traditional Balinese naming can tell you something about a person’s position in the birth order. Names such as Wayan, Made, Nyoman and Ketut are commonly associated with first, second, third and fourth-born children, although naming practices can vary between families and regions.
There is much more to Balinese names than simply knowing someone’s first name. Names, titles and family traditions can provide clues about heritage, community and cultural background.
What is the Balinese caste system?
The traditional Balinese social system is connected to Balinese Hindu culture and history. Visitors may hear terms such as Brahmana, Ksatria, Wesia and Sudra, but the way these groups and titles are understood in Bali has its own cultural context.
Rather than making assumptions from a name alone, learning directly from Balinese people provides a much better understanding of how these traditions are viewed today.
