Ghosts in my Village

Some people in our Villages can hear dead people, see ghosts & spirits

Memedi is a famous ghost that steals children. Most Balinese believe in this ghost.

Tuyuls

Balinese and Javanese people believe in Tuyuls as demonic creature, undead babies.

Leak – Ghost

This ghost is feared by Balinese, a leak looks like a head with fire.

Rangda – The Demon Queen

Rangda is the evil Ghost Queen of Leaks.

Barong – Good Spirit

Barong is a panther like creature, loved by Balinese people.

Black Magic

Black Magic is very real to most Balinese people

Penunggu Karong

Statues with sarong have a spirit to protect the local area, temples and people.
They are like a spirit security guard.

Birth Customs

In Bali the placenta is considered as a sibling of the baby and protects the baby for life. So it must be treated with respect.

The Mother and baby must stay inside for 42 days, if they don’t the spirits might be angry and hurt the baby or mum. There are many Ceremony for Babies.

Death & Cremation

Death and Cremation Ceremonies vary in different places.

Death & Cremation in my Village

When people die they are buried, not cremated, in Komang’s village.
A doll is made in the likeness of the person, The doll is burnt instead of the person.

Cremation in Komang’s Village

The Cremation Ceremony is very expensive.
So only happens every 7 years or when 40 people have died

Reincarnation

Balinese believe Reincarnation happens until the person is a very good person. Then they go to God and don’t come back.

Nyepi – Day of Silence

Balinese New year. Bali appears deserted, fooling the evil spirits into thinking no-one is there.
So they move on to make trouble elsewhere.

Melasti before Nyepi

Before Nyepi there are a lot of ceremonies to the beach acquiring sacred water from
the sea to cleanse sacred objects

Ogoh Ogoh  Parade – The night before Nyepi

Ogoh-ogohare statues built by men in the temples for the parade, the night before Nyepi.
They can take months to build and can be up to 6 metres high.

Ceremonies

Balinese people often return to their village for Ceremonies. Some are Ceremonies that everyone celebrate, others are specific Ceremonies for family and friends.
