What Is a Ketupat?
Have you ever wondered how the beautiful woven rice pouches used in Balinese ceremonies are made?
In this video, Kris’ mum is weaving a traditional Ketupat, an important part of many Balinese and Indonesian religious ceremonies and family celebrations.
A Ketupat is a small pouch carefully woven by hand from young coconut leaves. Once completed, it is filled with rice and cooked. As the rice expands inside the woven leaves, it forms a compact rice cake that is enjoyed during ceremonies and festive occasions.
The intricate weaving takes patience, practice and skill. For many Balinese families, making Ketupat is more than preparing food—it is a tradition passed from parents and grandparents to the next generation, helping keep cultural knowledge alive.
Visitors to Bali often see beautiful offerings such as Canang Sari, but there are many other traditions that are equally important. Everyday skills like weaving Ketupat, preparing ceremonial offerings and creating coconut leaf decorations are all part of Bali’s rich cultural heritage.
