One of the most rewarding parts of an EBC Experience Bali Culture workshop is hearing the stories behind Balinese traditions that many visitors never get to discover.
Recently, Komang and Kris shared a beautiful custom that takes place during Galungan, one of Bali’s most important religious celebrations.
During Galungan, Balinese families honour their ancestors who are believed to return to Earth for this sacred celebration. Alongside the colourful penjor and daily offerings, many visitors to a family home will also leave a small gift or offering for a new baby.
This thoughtful gesture is a way of welcoming the newest member of the family into the community. It represents blessings, good health, happiness and a bright future for the child. It also reflects the strong Balinese values of family, respect and community, where everyone shares in life’s important milestones.
These are the kinds of traditions that visitors rarely learn about unless they spend time with local Balinese people.
