It’s really fun trying a few Indonesian words with Balinese people. They really appreciate you trying. Don’t worry if you get it wrong, they will laugh with you and help you. It adds another aspect to your trip.

PRONUNCIATION TIPS  –  A  – like in father, C – as in  church, E – as in bed, G – like in gas, I/i  – like long e – as in bee,  K – like in kite, R – roll the r ( like Spanish), U – (“OO”) like in soon

 It’s good to ask a local to help with pronunciation.

Eating & Restaurants  # 4

  • Delicious – ENAK – great to say to staff in Restaurants or Warungs.
  • Very delicious – ENAK SEKALI – even better to say to staff or workers
  • I want a small, cold beer – SAYA MAU BINTANG KECIL DINGIN
  • One more beer please -TOLONG BIRNYA SATU LAGI
  • Where is the toilet – DIMANA TOILETNYA

  • I’m hungry – SAYA LAPAR
  • I’m thirsty – SAYA HAUS
  • I want to order – SAYA MAU PESAN
  • Can I take leftovers home? – BISA DIBUNKUS – most places will be happy for you to take any left overs home and will wrap ( bunkus) it up for you
  • Can I have the bill please – BISA MINTA BON

   Eating & Restaurants  # 2

  • A little bit – SEDIKIT  – you can point to food and say “sedikit” if you just want a small amount
  • A little spicey/hot – SEDIKIT PEDAS – sometimes you will be asked if you want your meal spicey/hot. Be careful if you say you want it spicey – Many Balinese like their food very spicey/hot.
  • Not Spicy/hot – TIDAK PEDAS – this is if you don’t want any hot spice.
  • Less sugar – SEDIKIT GULA – many drinks, fruit juices, tea and coffee will have A LOT of sugar in them. Even a little sugar might be too much.
  • No sugar – TANPA GULA – if you prefer not to have any sugar in your drink
  • One More – SATU LAGI – if you want one more anything – beer, drink, egg for example
  • Two more – DUA LAGI – if you want two more anything

  • I want Nasi Goreng ( fried rice) – SAYA MAU NASI GORENG
  • White Rice – NASI PUTIH
  • A little bit of rice – SEDIKAT NASI
  • Spicy food – MAKANAN PEDAS

or you can just say “BAIK”

USEFUL INDONESIAN   # 2  – WHEN OUT & ABOUT IN BALI

When you are shopping and just want to look without a commitment to buy, you can say:

“LIHAT LIHAT AJA”  that means “just looking “
but you also just say “LIHAT LIHAT”
Often the shop keeper will repeat that and leave you alone. Or they will say “Silakan” which means “please look around”. Give it a try and see what happens, this can make your shopping trip a lot less stressful.

TERIMA KASIH – means thank you. You can also just say MAKASIH – that’s easier and means Thanks.
TERIMA KASIH BANYAK – Thank you very much.

One of my favourites is “ TIDAK APA APA”  –  this means “ it doesn’t matter”, “no problem”.

It takes a little practice to learn to say it easily  but can be used in all sorts of situations.
For example, if a driver arrives late, or they make a mistake in a Restaurant. Try saying “TIDAK APA APA” and everything is ok.

You can say SORE

Good night – SELAMAT MALAM  – or just MALAM
