The Art of Gratitude – Understanding Canang Sari

If you’ve ever walked the streets of Bali, you’ve likely stepped around small, colorful palm-leaf baskets resting on the ground or tucked into shrines. These are Canang Sari, and they are the heartbeat of Balinese Hindu culture.

What is Canang Sari?
The word Canang comes from “Ca” (leaf) and “Nang” (purpose), while Sari means “essence.” Together, they represent a daily self-sacrifice of time and gratitude to the Creator (Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa).

Why is it made every day?
For the Balinese, life is a delicate balance between the physical and spiritual worlds. Canang Sari is made daily to:

  • Show Gratitude: A thank you for the peace and prosperity given to the household.
  • Maintain Balance: Honouring both the positive and protective forces of the universe.
  • Practice Mindfulness: The act of weaving the Ceper (tray) and arranging the flowers is a form of meditation.

Each element has a meaning—the white lime, red betel nut, and green gambier represent the Trimurti (Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu), ensuring the universe remains in harmony.

Experience it yourself!
