Bali is very different from the West, so we love sharing the little things about our beautiful Bali. These small but fascinating traditions help you understand the richness of Balinese culture. (Beliefs can vary between villages.)

✨ 1. Spirit Trees & Black-and-White Cloth
In Bali, you’ll often see trees and shrines wrapped in black-and-white checkered cloth. This represents duality — light and darkness, good and evil — which is central to Balinese Hinduism. These sacred “spirit trees” are believed to house spirits, so offerings are made to keep them happy. Some drivers even toot their horn twice when passing to show respect.

✨ 2. Rice on the Forehead for Prosperity
After ceremonies or blessings, Balinese often place a few grains of rice on their forehead. This small gesture is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity.

✨ 3. The Right Hand Tradition
In Bali, the left hand is considered unclean. Out of respect, people give and receive items only with their right hand. It’s a small but important detail of Balinese etiquette.
