Ali: Hi Komang
Komang: Hi Ali.
Ali: I’ve got some more questions for you today. I’d like to learn more about your village. I know it’s remote, it’s a long way away, and so can you tell me a bit about it? Where is your village?
Komang: My village is in Karangasem, Northern Bali.
Ali: Okay, correct, Karang…… I can’t say it. How do you say it?
Komang: Karang.. asam
Ali: Okay, Karangasem and so how long does it take to get there on your motorbike.
Komang: From Kuta? Maybe around three hours,
Ali: okay. That’s a long way.
Komang: And maybe in the car, maybe around five hours.
Ali: Wow, that is a long way. So how often do you get to your village?
Komang: Maybe once a month, usually, when we have ceremony in the village, but sometimes twice a month, depends on the ceremony
Ali: on the ceremonies, you go back for the ceremonies.
Ali: And is it up in the mountains? Sorry, is it in the mountain? Up high?
Komang: Yeah my village is in the mountain, maybe, from the city around 40 minutes up.
Ali: Wow. And is it a good road or not a good road? Is it hard to drive?
Komang: Yeah, it’s hard to drive, so many holes, and then the road is up
Ali: steep, very steep
Komang: yeah, very steep.
Ali: And sometimes do people fall off their motorbikes going up that road?
Komang: Yeah, yeah, I have fallen off. Yeah
Ali:Oh no, you, okay
Komang: yeah, just my motor bike broken a little bit, so I’m sad.
Ali: Oh no, and, so who lives in your village now?
Komang: Sorry,
Ali: Who lives in your village?
Komang: Who lives in my village?
Ali: Yeah, some of your family?
Komang: Oh, yeah, my family all my mum, my auntie, and lots of my family lives in the Village , but mostly older people,
Ali: Older people still in the village. So do young people come to Kuta for work?
Komang: Uh yeah, many young people not prefer to work in tourist area, not just to Kuta, some people work in Canggu, some people go to Denpasar because in my village is not many tourist area so it’s hard for them to get a good job.
Ali: Yeah okay,
Komang: for a good money
Ali: and when they come to Canggu or Kuta, what work do they usually do, the young people?
Komang: Most people work in the spa,or sometime usually the men is driver, like a go Gojek or Grab.
Ali: Okay yeah, so they can get some work. And what about in the village? What work do they do in the village?
Komang: In the village, in my village, the most job is make brown sugar. Brown Sugar, yeah, Mike Brown Sugar. Some people also have, uh, animal like a cow, pig, or chicken. They usually, feed the animal until they big enough, and they usually sell the animal to get some money.
Ali: And how do they feed the animals? What do they use?
Komang: for the cow, usually they cutting grass in the mountain for the cow. But for the pig, maybe be easier to make their food. Maybe they just get, cut like some plants, similar like grass, but special type
Ali: special pig grass,
Komang: special pig grass, yeah, and special type.
Ali: Okay, and I think I heard that in your workshop, you have some videos of people in your village.
Komang: Yeah uh, in EBC we have a video about ceremony in the village and the video about what the people do in the village. So when you want to watch the video, you can come to EBC workshop in Kuta.
Ali: excellent. Yeah, it’s a great idea because it’s a village that tourists couldn’t go to too far for any tourists to have a look at.
Komang: yeah, too far. And the traffic in Bali is getting bad now. Lots of problem, yeah, and the first one, maybe the road is broken, so they, they say they need one month to fix.
Ali: yeah, so it’s not somewhere tourists can go, but they can see videos of your village, your remote village, yeah, in EBC workshop.
Excellent. Thank you so much.
Komang: You’re welcome.
